Abstract

The purpose of this article is to recognize the importance of mentoring in higher education and to identify useful strategies to ensure effective mentorship. The authors demonstrate and apply evidence-based approaches and strategies for effective mentorship in both online and in-person classroom settings. A discussion of four major strategies needed for effective mentoring leads to an exploration of how to support educators as mentors so that they, in turn, may best support our students. Drawing on the Marsick and Watkins model of informal and incidental learning (Knippelmeyer & Torraco, 2007), a model of mentoring in higher education is proposed.
