From Accommodation to Empowerment: The Risks and Benefits of GenAI for Neurodiverse College Students

Abstract

While the potential for GenAI in the academic environment is extensively debated, the discussion largely excludes the impact of this technology on the neurodiverse population. Current AI research is focused on the neurotypical population, with little consideration for neurodiverse students. While there is an opportunity for AI to be used as a personalized support system and a powerful contributor to a classroom founded on UDL, this cannot be accomplished without instructor support and guidance along with the careful incorporation of feedback. Careful policy creation and classroom implementation are required to best meet all student needs.
