Abstract

Educators increasingly incorporate service-learning to connect business with society while enhancing career readiness. Student enthusiasm is vital: Enthusiastic participants embrace opportunities and benefits, enhancing learning potential and advantages to community partners. Despite its importance, this relationship remains under-researched. This study applies the Theory of Planned Behavior (Azjen, 1991) to examine factors influencing students’ enthusiasm for a sophomore-level business course service-learning assignment. Using survey data from 140 students, the authors’ model explained 61% of variance in enthusiasm. Students reported greater enthusiasm when they held positive attitudes toward service-learning, felt supported, had adequate skills and time, and approached the experience with openness.
