Abstract

This case study examined the impact of a health career-focused learning community program for first-semester community college students. The program thematically linked three courses together: a freshman or developmental English course, a psychology or biology course required for most health career majors, and a student success seminar for incoming freshmen. Course pass rates, retention to the next semester, and grade point average were used to compare learning community participants (n = 85) to a matched comparison group (n = 95). In addition, an outside evaluator interviewed students and faculty members in the learning community program in a formative assessment of their experience.
