Abstract

Two hundred twenty-two students who graduated from a four-year liberal arts college between 1964 and 1990 responded to a request from the author for narratives concerning their most effective and most ineffective professors. Analysis of the graduates' descriptions of the ineffective professors suggests that they shared three dominant characteristics: lack of passion for their subject matter, inability to connect students to subject matter, and indifference or hostility toward students. Isolating and focusing on specific behaviors that the graduates linked with their professors' pedagogical failures, the author presents narratives that bring to life familiar generalizations about ineffective professors and suggests strategies for improvement.
