Abstract

Educators struggle with three issues related to critical thinking: what it is, how to teach the skills, and how to measure such skills. One baccalaureate nursing program in western Canada addressed the latter two issues by adopting a problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum and by using the California Critical Thinking Skills Test and the California Critical Thinking Dispositions Inventory as measurement tools in a pilot study. In addition, the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric was used to evaluate the critical-thinking levels of students' writing. Students' critical thinking scores and dispositions did increase over one year of using PBL.
