Abstract

The authors present a discussion of issues that emerged from a staff development workshop within an educational institution that has decided to implement problem-based learning (PBL) in all courses in the institution by the end of 2001. While many advocates of PBL may see this as highly desirable, such an endorsement of PBL as the standard institutional educational approach is not without its challenges. As was demonstrated by the data collected in the workshop, the major challenges lie in curriculum design and associated implementation rather than with the use of PBL as an instructional strategy.
