Abstract

The authors present information data from a review of the relevant literature and a qualitative case study undertaken to explore and describe the experiences of Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) graduate students attending an American university. Complicating factors, such as a lack of cultural context and background knowledge as well as the process of second language acquisition itself posed challenges for the students. The authors discuss how professors can offer EFL university students greater assistance in their efforts to acquire the linguistic understanding and skills needed for university study.
