Abstract

The author offers suggestions for improving the classroom listening skills of both college teachers and students. His suggestions for college students include providing a curriculum that includes listening-training courses, such as self-administered pre-post listening inventory tests; interactive videdisc or CD-ROM listening-skills training; classroom exercises, such as paraphrasing verbal messages; and written journals. For teachers, his suggestions include developing empathic listening skills, modeling patience with students through ample wait time, and periodic paraphrasing of students' verbal responses to ensure mutual understanding.
