Abstract

The goals of this research were to determine (a) the prototypical features of the ideal professor from the undergraduate student perspective, (b) the role of professors verbal and nonverbal communication behaviors within this concept, and (c) any differences between female and male students' rankings of these prototypical features. An analysis of student responses to a questionnaire revealed 24 features of the ideal professor, in three general categories: personal, interpersonal, and classrelated characteristics. The prototype included 11 verbal and nonverbal communication behaviors. Female and male students differed in the ranks they assigned to both the general categories and the specific prototypical features of the ideal professor.
