Abstract

One Sunday, a young woman came to my home to learn about George Mason University's Center for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, where I now teach. Her father is the foremost "sustainable" economist in the United States, and so she is thoroughly aware of the impending global crises: The world population will hit 12 billion-on its way to 15 billion or more-at about the time that natural gas and oil reserves are virtually depleted and global climate warming begins to have a significant impact on local ecosystems. Yet she told me that, in four years as an undergraduate at a well-known American university, none of her courses touched upon any of these issues.
