Abstract

The learning strategies pedagogy implemented in a first-year learning community (FYLC) during the 2008 U.S. political primary election season is the focus of the author’s work. This best-practices article defines a student learning community and describes the specific student learning community used as the model. A cursory literature review on bias in the classroom and recommendations for how to avoid it accompany the project. Finally, the author includes charts that illustrate the distribution of assignments and offers recommendations on how best to execute such a FYLC.
