Abstract

A Director of New Student Programs at Miami University describes the process and results of developing an orientation
program that fosters engaged learning for students, families, and orientation leaders. The changes resulted from the director’s
participation in a Community of Practice on Engaged Learning that involved both faculty and administrators. She applies the concept of self-authorship and the Learning Partnerships Model to the orientation program, and a framework of competencies provides structure for student learning, orientation leader training, and program assessment.
