Abstract

The authors use the perspective of intersectionality to inform the idea of inclusive excellence. Most studies relating diverse environments to learning outcomes focus on one dimension of diversity in undergraduate education. In contrast, this study examines how intersectionality can enhance inclusive excellence and how diverse research teams foster multifaceted engagement with diversity for graduate students. The authors first discuss research on the educational benefits of diverse learning environments and present the main principles of intersectionality. Next, they describe how they used intersectionality in creating and implementing an intersectional, active-learning research team. Finally, they share their team experiences to illustrate how the team experience benefited its participants and shaped research outcomes.
