Abstract

In this time of diminishing resources, with potentially concomitant increasing class size, attention must turn to finding ways of improving the quality of teaching and learning in large-class settings. This article reports students' views on what enhances or detracts from their learning experience in large classes. Discussed first are three beliefs faculty often have about large classes and five challenges associated with teaching large classes. This discussion is followed by the results of a survey that asked students what they liked most and least about large classes. Recommendations are offered to address some of the major concerns students voiced in their survey responses.
