Abstract

Peer response and other writing groups have become a main stay of college composition instruction. Although these groups are a progressive step away from the old teacher-centered, error-based model for teaching writing, they can present problems for women, minorities, and anyone else who has difficulty establishing an authentic voice in what Brazilian educator Paulo Freire called a "culture of silence." Some students surveyed confirmed this theory, and instructors must be sensitive to students' difficulties in establishing trust with other members in a group.
