Abstract

This study profiled excellent lecturers and discussion leaders from the perspective of undergraduate college students. We expected that students' perceptions of variables characterizing excellent lecturers would generally differ from students' perceptions of variables characterizing excellent discussion leaders. Thirty students completed questionnaires assessing their perceptions of imagined excellent lecturers and discussion leaders. As predicted, students rated higher levels of instructors' interpersonal skills, focus on students' personal/professional growth, and focus on encouraging independent thinking/research as more characteristic of excellent discussion leaders than excellent lecturers. Students rated higher levels of instructors' preparation and focus on factual learning as more characteristic of excellent lecturers than excellent discussion leaders.
