Abstract

The authors conducted a two-year pilot project in which a one-semester biology course for non-science students normally taught using a lecture format was taught without a single lecture. Instead, the lectures were replaced with guided learning activities and weekly exams that were designed to help students gain the confidence to be independent learners, especially in science; assume responsibility for their own learning; improve their study skills; and make more effective use of class time. The results indicate that the experimental format was significantly more successful than the traditional lecture format in terms of students' exam grades, class averages, and overall satisfaction.
