Abstract

This paper reports on the use of open-ended questions on a senior exit survey to help evaluate and improve faculty performance. Graduating seniors were asked to comment if any of their teachers had been exceptional in a positive or negative sense and, if so, to give reasons for their conclusions. The report includes a brief history of the project, including faculty reactions and a summary of the students' concerns; describes the methodology for the textual analysis of the student responses; and compares the open-ended question approach with more traditional evaluation instruments such as the department head review, student evaluation of instruction, peer review, and alumni and employer surveys to show the exit survey's contribution to a multi-trait, multi-method approach to faculty evaluation
