Abstract

Analytical literacy is vital to a sophisticated perspective of the scope of historical potential in general and to scholarship in humanistic study in particular. Analytical literacy can be attained via a paradigm that moves students from "understand ing" to "interpretation" of the accessible cultural artifacts of interest to them. Although this paradigm was devised for first-year composition students who wrote alarmingly shallow literary criticism, it can readily be adapted to courses across the curriculum. Detailed application of this adjustable paradigm to the field of English and some brief suggestions for application to other fields illustrate how to achieve analytical literacy.
