Abstract

The closing address of the 17th annual Lilly Conference on College Teaching, November 22, 1997, was presented by four members of the English department of Bryn Mawr College. In our panel, we explored what each of us understands the concept "new" to mean, when thinking about our classrooms, our interactions with our students, and our expectations for ourselves, as we attempt to prepare students for the 21st century. Jane Hedley described her new course on theories of reading, Susan Dean focused on the social dislocations that a multicultural curriculum discloses, Anne Dalke traced the evolution of her interdisciplinary teaching, and Linda-Susan Beard explored spiritual approaches to literary texts. We interlaced the reflections we brought to share with observations we heard at other sessions of the conference, which appear below as italicized quotations.
