Abstract

Research-based learning (RBL) is a model for merging research and undergraduate education at colleges and universities. To link RBL with a curriculum across an institution, we put forth the concept of a research-based learning conduit (RBLC) composed of discipline-specific RBL strands. Each RBL strand comprises a set of interconnected course options, called critical connection courses, which couple out-of-class research experiences with an established curriculum. Conceptually, student learning in these strands is sustained in academic and learning "spirals" of intellectual growth and professional skills. RBLC is a potentially successful strategy for the sustained merger of research and undergraduate education.
