Abstract

One of the biggest challenges faced by colleges and universities is the merger of research and undergraduate education. The authors' four-year-long effort to meet this challenge has produced a model for research-based learning (RBL). As an approach to enhanced undergraduate learning, RBL is based on using thematic, collaborative research and related activities as learning tools. The results of the project show that RBL (a) serves more students than traditional undergraduate research models, (b) encourages faculty-student interaction, (c) stimulates new scholarship, and (d) better prepares undergraduates to adapt successfully to the demands of today's workplace.
