Abstract

Service-learning programs need faculty support in order to succeed. Unfortunately, many faculty remain unconvinced of the power of service-learning pedagogy for teaching and faculty professional development. The author presents a case study relating one approach for employing service learners in faculty research and analyzing the usefulness of the model by testing it at an international summit on children's issues. Nine students who had previous service-learning experience with children's organizations served as participant-observers at the summit. The students' field reports yielded a solid profile of ideal environments for children worldwide. The students reported that their previous service-learning activities contributed significantly to the success of their research.
