Abstract

As a result of a nearly unanimous recommendation of the faculty senate in the spring of 1992, the teaching portfolio became a mandated component of merit reviews and promotion and tenure decisions for all 1,700 faculty at the University of Kentucky. In the fall of 1992, faculty members developed portfolios for the first time, and in the following spring, they responded to a questionnaire about their reactions to the new procedure. The present article sketches the circumstances that led to the adoption of the teaching portfolio, describes the implementation process, and reports the major findings of the faculty survey. Despite some obvious difficulties, the response to the portfolio was more positive than might have been expected considering that the process involved all faculty at a large research institution and was put into place in a relatively short period of time.
