Abstract

Sophisticated computing technologies are a key element of today's information economy, and many professional degree programs now offer instruction in them. Using complex computer hardware and software in the classroom, however, can create an instructional environment in which the technology overwhelms learning outcomes. The author outlines a framework that seeks to counter this imbalance. Focusing on technology as a tool rather than on the technology itself, he identifies the four facets of technology that students need to understand in order to use it in a critically informed and sophisticated manner. The author demonstrates the utility of this framework with before-and-after comparisons of results in one of his own classes.
