Abstract

The Midnight Run is late-night trip into New York City to distribute sandwiches to people who are homeless. The author explores how this experience surprised students taking a first-year seminar on poverty at a liberal arts college and how it stimulated critical thinking among them. She describes the origins of the Midnight Run, explains the preparations students undertook to conduct it, and discusses the framework used for discussing critical thinking. Examples from students' journal entries provide evidence of the beginnings of critical thinking.
