Abstract

"When it comes to pulling the evidence together, we are impressed by the portfolio idea-a procedure that encourages faculty to document their work in a variety of ways" (Boyer, 1990, p. 40). Since 1989 the authors have discussed the teaching portfolio concept at more than 150 colleges and universities of differing sizes and missions. They have talked with countless faculty groups and administrators about the portfolio and its place in the improvement and evaluation of teaching. In addition, they have served as mentors to several hundred professors across disciplines and institutions in preparing portfolios. In the course of this activity, certain questions have been raised by professors and administrators with much greater frequency than others. This article is devoted to answering those questions.
