Abstract

In Achieving Educational Excellence, Alexander Astin, director of UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute, suggests that one way to improve higher education is to move toward a model of talent development for faculty and students alike. Besides proposing ways in which institutional commitments can be made to talent development as a whole, Astin's (1985) recommendations for improving college teaching relate to one central issue: student involvement. Recent research indicating that "learning will be greatest when the learning environment is structured to encourage active participation by the student" justifies such involvement (p. 142).
