Abstract

Indiana University Bloomington sponsors an interdisciplinary initiative to improve student learning by fostering faculty inquiry into learning. Recent developments confirm this model. The authors discuss three principles around which the Indiana Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) Program has been developed: The SoTL, as field of research, should be supported, evaluated, and rewarded in ways parallel to other fields; the SoTL, as a program focus, should foster a community of scholars who create and disseminate research; and the SoTL, as a field of scholarship and as a program, should enhance student learning through the dynamic relationship between scholarly teaching and scholarship on teaching and learning.
