Abstract

This article describes a three-year joint project between Community College of Philadelphia and Beaver College that sought to raise the transfer aspirations and to improve the transfer skills of nontraditional students. Funded by the William Penn Foundation, the project enabled minority and low-income students to participate in a five-week residential program at Beaver College, during which they took two interdisciplinary courses cotaught by faculty from both institutions. Drawing from Foundation reports, student evaluations, and experiences in teaching one of the interdisciplinary courses, the authors highlight the factors that appear to have been most powerful in improving transfer skills and raising transfer aspirations.
