Abstract

The faculty learning community (FLC) model is ideal for the successful preparation of graduate students as scholarly instructors, citizens of the college community, scholars in their disciplines, and producers of the scholarship of teaching and learning. In contrast to the other programs highlighted in this volume, the Claremont Graduate University (CGU) Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Fellows program is built on the FLC cohort model of a year-long program with a curriculum to introduce members to the many issues that surround a career in higher education. PFF FLC members are selected from CGU doctoral students to create a multi-disciplinary group of between 9 and 20 participants. Results of participation in the PFF FLC include greater understanding of the academic career, creation of full course portfolios, success in finding appropriate academic positions, and production of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
