Abstract

The author asserts that the Doctor of Arts (DA) degree as developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of College Teaching should be revisited and given serious consideration by those exploring alternative future doctoral preparation of college and university faculty. Designed to produce interdisciplinary academics and promote scholarly teaching, the DA provides a time-tested model that can further advance excellence in college teaching if promoted and developed at appropriate colleges and universities. Thus, it should be included in the current debate regarding how to address the daunting task of preparing future teaching faculty effectively.
