Abstract

An analysis of 1331 academic job advertisements from Canadian and U.S. institutions revealed points of disconnect between the goals of programs that prepare graduate students for academic careers and the expectations of academic employers. From a graduate student development perspective, the results suggest that job advertisements could be used to strengthen the preparation of graduate students for career planning and the job search. From an administrative perspective, the results indicate that institutions could enhance their job advertisements to recruit faculty who will thrive in their particular institution and in the changing world of academic work.
