Abstract

With increasing teaching responsibilities within anthropology graduate departments and high competition for a limited number of academic positions after graduate school, there is a need to develop and maintain discipline-specific teaching assistant and graduate student pedagogical training. Although there has been some effort to offer pedagogical training to graduate students in anthropology in colleges and universities across the U.S., such training usually has been initiated by individual faculty. Through a Preparing Future Faculty project, a team of anthropology graduate students at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee explored with a faculty member how to expand the professional development of students who wish to pursue a career in academia. The project provided opportunities for students and faculty to work together intensively and to reflect upon pedagogical issues through a seminar, workshops, and a one-credit course.
