Abstract

In academia, scholarship has long been privileged over teaching and service, which traditionally have been considered
“women’s work.” In 1990, Boyer envisioned “the scholarship of teaching” as a way to legitimize teaching as a scholarly activity. The authors investigated whether Boyer’s vision has been realized—specifically, whether the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is the purview of both male and female faculty and practiced at every career stage, in a range of disciplines, and across all institutional types. A systematic document analysis of five years of selected SoTL journals was conducted. Authors were both male and female and distributed across academic ranks. Despite equity in gender and career stage, however, SoTL authors came primarily from research universities and education-related disciplines. Implications include the need for the academy to balance inclusiveness with prestige in SoTL publications.
