Abstract

Out-of-class experiences that women students have with advisers and instructors can affect their learning, aspirations, and confidence levels. Sandler (1991) contends that a "chilly" climate exists for women faculty at the college level and called for research on how students perceive and treat female versus male faculty. This study examines the frequency and length of students' meetings with advisers as well as student evaluations of advisers' credibility and empathy based on adviser sex, student sex, class year, and major. Adviser sex, class year, and major exerted strong influence on students' perceptions of communication with their advisers.
