Abstract

Social learning theory provides ideas and techniques for teaching complex thinking skills such as mathematical problem solving. The theory behind the concept of the teacher as a model is surveyed and illustrated with descriptions of classroom techniques employed by the author. These techniques include taking advantage of classroom mistakes to model thinking and problem solving. Student evaluation results indicate that instructor credibility is unaffected by the use of these techniques.
