A Community of Practice to Assess Students’ Teamwork Skills in a Team-Based Learning Setting

Abstract

This article reports a research study in a community of practice (CoP) at Hong Kong Baptist University. A subgroup of the CoP piloted the Comprehensive Assessment of Team Member Effectiveness Survey to measure students’ teamwork skills development in a co-curricular project adapted to the team-based learning (TBL) approach. This study adopted a mixed-methods approach that involved
quantitative and qualitative data. The article also discusses other possible tools for assessing teamwork skills. Several features of effective TBL are summarized in order to assist further implementation in academic courses.
