Abstract

For both structural and cultural reasons, faculty development is often disconnected from organizational development agendas. This gap can reduce the perceived value of faculty development programs and simultaneously limit the success of institutional initiatives. Our experience with a faculty learning community supporting the scholarship of teaching and learning indicates that doing inquiry in community can create powerful bridges between these levels. The yearlong program fostered common language across diverse disciplines; highlighted areas of common inquiry and passion; connected classroom practice to broader initiatives, such as general education reform and learning outcomes assessment; and broke down cultural resistance to curricular change.
