Abstract

The authors, a mathematics instructor and a composition instructor, developed a learning community that combines College Algebra and Composition II. They chronicle the work that led to launching the learning community, move to the first semester they taught, and conclude with reflections on what they have learned in subsequent semesters of teaching together. The authors and their students have discovered surprising connections between mathematics and language; have found that writing leads to deeper, more meaningful, more contextual learning; and have especially come to appreciate the value of collaborative learning through talk and writing.
