Abstract

The author presents nine teaching strategies to increase correspondence between visual and auditory modes of presentation. These techniques, focusing on the syntax of the presentation, the placement/movement of the instructor, and methods of eliciting students' input, were first designed to prevent learning barriers in classroom presentations for students with hearing or visual impairments, but they have proved to promote clarity in presentations for all students. They also have been found useful by sighted/hearing students with visual or auditory learning preferences, and by non-native English speakers who tape classes for home review.
