Abstract

Adjunct faculty in a continuing education setting need both incentives and support to create teaching portfolios. In such a setting at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), portfolio preparation has been linked to annual teaching excellence awards. The Faculty Development staff offers workshops, portfolio information packets, and sample portfolios to potential award recipients and other faculty members; provides one-on-one coaching and consultation; and capitalizes on the positive experiences of faculty who have completed portfolios. As a result of this initiative, a proactive, nurturing climate, in which the enhancement of teaching informs the teaching portfolio process, has developed at UMUC.
