Abstract

The authors outline and discuss strategies and structures to support university teaching innovation and excellence. They raise a number of issues about supporting innovative teaching and facilitating institutional change in light of findings from the literature. The authors report on two studies they carried out, one investigating ways to promote good teaching and the other evaluating the outcomes of a system of faculty awards for undertaking innovative teaching projects. Some of the issues they discuss include the importance of institutional support for teaching innovations, the second-order outcomes of innovations, and ways to build a culture of change and teaching improvement across a university.
