Abstract

In 1920, Arthur Morgan created a unique model of liberal arts education at Antioch College that acknowledged both the classroom and the world of work as laboratories of learning (Henderson & Hall, 1946). Since then, cooperative education has become a fairly common option for postsecondary students, particularly if they are enrolled in a technical or professional program. Most internships or practica today are designed expressly to enhance what Schoen calls the "artistry" of professional practice, that is, where "... the knowing is in the action ... we are characteristically unable to make it verbally explicit" (1987, p. 25).
