Abstract

Much of the research on uncivil behavior in the college/universi-ty classroom has focused on individual academic fields of study and been conducted at one, typically public, institution. This study examined perceptions of classroom incivility of faculty members (N = 166) from both public and private two- and four-year institutions. The authors found that older, White faculty members with more years of teaching experience are more likely to consider these behaviors serious, and that faculty members who hold a higher academic rank (associate professors and professors) say they see these behaviors more frequently. Sug-gestions for reducing classroom incivility and future research methods are explored.
