Abstract

This article summarizes two comprehensive studies--one quan titative and the other qualitative--of the learning style preferences of physical education majors. In the quantitative study, the Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Styles Scale was used to determine the preferred learning styles of physical education majors. Also explored were (a) the extent to which these learning styles varied according to gender, age, and ethnicity, and (b) how the preferred learning styles of physical education majors compared with those of students in other disciplines. In the qualitative study, researchers interviewed physical education majors regarding their learning preferences and performed inductive analysis to identify common themes in the responses. After reporting the results of both studies, the authors present 11 ways to improve teaching and learning--applicable not only to physical education but also to other disciplines that were suggested by students' responses to the interview questions.
