Abstract

Negative stereotypes of Nonwhites in television play an important role in sustaining racism in U.S. society. The authors describe an assignment in which students in groups explore their own media world to confront implicit racial messages in a variety of televisual programming that was ostensibly not about race. By using critical-thinking skills, students developed a sophisticated understanding of how institutional practices in U.S. society can operate to sustain negative, stereotypical beliefs about certain groups.
