Abstract

In order to encourage students to be self-motivated, engaged, critical thinkers, instructors must shift away from the traditional teacher-centered class to one that allows students to take responsibility for their own learning. Instructors may be hesitant to change classroom power relationships due to students' resistance to assuming more responsibility. The authors implemented several activities designed intentionally to help their students acclimate to an empowered classroom setting and to minimize students' resistance to the changed expectations. Students responded positively to all aspects of the empowered classroom and adapted quickly to the empowered setting.
