Abstract

Those who teach research methods courses may struggle to engage students who are anxious or apprehensive about taking the course. Thus, it becomes the obligation of the instructor to develop innovative approaches so that students overcome their apprehension, learn the material, and, it is hoped, develop a passion for research. The authors present one such innovative approach (Project M) that involves combining aspects from multiple teaching techniques (traditional, active, coopera- tive, and collaborative learning) with a reality television-like experience. They also present anonymous qualitative student evaluation data collected at three points during the semester using a descriptive feedback method. The feedback suggests the effective nature of Project M as a learning strategy for research methods students.
